Etruria Tour: Visit Arezzo and Cortona in One Day

Our driver will collect you from your accommodation in the morning just after breakfast, and return you there in the evening. Today your first destination is Arezzo, one of the most important cities of Italy during Etruscan and medieval times. Here you can visit the cathedral with its beautiful stained-glass windows and the church of St. Francis with the famous frescoes by Piero della Francesca. You can also visit the city centre, well known for its fashion ateliers and goldsmithing workshops.
Your hired car will then drive you to the town of Cortona in time for lunch in a typical restaurant, where you may taste the traditional home made pasta called “pici”, followed by a deliciously juicy steak of Chianina meat. Cortona is extraordinarily rich in history: explore its charming Medieval streets, see the Etruscan city walls and visit the Etruscan Museum, one of the richest and most famous in the world.
The great hilltop location makes Cortona one of the jewels of Tuscany, allowing breathtaking views upon the Trasimeno Lake and Valdichiana, a wide valley where tobacco and sunflowers are grown. Wine lovers may also decide to visit one of the wineries of the local wine trail, such as Avignonesi, where you can learn everything about traditional wine-making techniques.

Here you can pleasantly have a walk along the narrow streets and alleys of the old town center and take beautiful pictures from picturesque viewpoints. From Sorano, in approximately half an hour, you can reach Pitigliano, the largest town in this area, which was also an ancient Etruscan settlement. Walking around the old town center, full of medieval monuments, where you will find that all the buildings are made of tuff, it will be possible to visit the Jewish Synagogue of this town, one of the most remarkable Jewish temples that can be admired in Tuscany. Driver Tuscany also recommends Pitigliano to have lunch in one of its typical restaurants, that serve tasty local specialties such as wild boar, truffles and porcini mushrooms. On the way back, you can stop for a short visit in Sovana, which was another important Etruscan hamlet. The Duomo is the most remarkable medieval monument in the old town center: inside the church you can admire the oldest pre-Romanesque ciborium (VIII century A.D.) in Tuscany.

MONTERCHI – SANSEPOLCRO – AREZZO

Driver Tuscany Il Girasole suggests that you start this tour, that will introduce you to places that exhibit masterpieces of Italian painting, with Monterchi, a small hamlet built on a hilltop, worldwide famous for the museum that preserves the “Madonna del Parto”, renowned fresco by Piero della Francesca. A short distance from Monterchi, Limousine Service Il Girasole recommends visiting the charming city of Sansepolcro, the main town in the area. In the old town center, enclosed by medieval town walls, that are one of the best preserved examples of this type of fortifications, you can admire many fine medieval and renaissance palaces and churches, richly decorated with frescoes. The Civic Museum exhibits remarkable artworks, such as the “Resurrection” and the “Polyptych of the Misericordia” by Piero della Francesca; the museum also preserves documents that tell the visitors how Piero della Francesca used to get part of the pigments, that he then used in his paintings, from the wildflowers that grew along the Tiber banks. Limousine Service Il Girasole also recommends Sansepolcro to have lunch in one of its typical restaurants. On the way back, another very interesting city to visit is Arezzo, an Etruscan settlement that in the Middle Ages became one of the most powerful medieval city-states in Italy. Here you can visit the cathedral and the church of San Francesco, that preserves the famous cycle of frescoes depicting the “Legend of the True Cross”, a masterpiece by Piero della Francesca. An enjoyable walk along the main streets of the historic center will put a final touch to this pleasant tour.

For the historical and architectural interest of this scenic tour, Limotuscany recommends an early departure in the morning to get to Volterra. Volterra was one of the most important and powerful Etruscan settlements, and it is now a city of art that stands out for its remarkable architectural and artistic heritage. The old town center still preserves many Etruscan remains (such as Porta dell’Arco, the main gateway to the town; much of the town walls; the Acropolis, where there are the foundations of two temples; and many underground tombs), ruins dating back to the Roman period (such as the Theater) and beautiful medieval buildings, such as the Cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori. Volterra is also famous for the alabaster processing and for its fine artistic handicraft, that can be admired in the workshops of the old town center. Driver Tuscany suggests that the tour will then continue to San Gimignano, with lunch followed by a visit to the town. The historic center of San Gimignano, still enclosed by the thirteenth-century town walls, has preserved almost intact its medieval structure with thirteen slender towers, that have earned it the nickname of “Manhattan of the Middle Ages”. Given the beauty of this monumental complex, San Gimignano has been listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site and it is worldwide famous for its fine architectural works, such as the remarkable Romanesque Duomo.

Visit Pisa and Lucca

Our chauffeur will pick you up from your accommodation after breakfast, and return you in the evening. Your first destination for this exhilarating day tour is Pisa with its unique Leaning Tower.
Built in the 12th Century next to the Cathedral, the belltower soon began to sink and lean, keeping the inhabitants of Pisa in great apprehension over the centuries, but ultimately becoming a world-famous landmark and the symbol of the city.
The wide grassy expanse called Piazza dei Miracoli comprises also the Cathedral and the Battistero, also built using the famous white marble from the quarries at Carrara.
After lunch in one of the typical restaurants, the car will take you to Lucca, famous for its intact Renaissance city walls whose top is now a beautiful tree-lined promenade.
Don’t miss the peculiar Piazza Ovale built upon the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheater, and shop for souvenirs in the traditional craft workshops.
